MENAGERIE OF THE IMAGINARY

Storymill Park - January 2021

The Menagerie of the Imaginary brought to life 15 imaginary friend sculptures created by local artists. The imaginary friends encircled the Great Lawn at Story Mill Park, allowing visitors to stroll and discover each creation as they walked the loop. The sculptures braved wind, snow and cold cheerfully and brought color and brightness to the depths of winter.

MEET THE IMAGINARY FRIENDS!

Baldor the Bumble Bearadgerine

Imagined and brought to life by:

CLAIRE KLEESE

Look for Baldor wherever pollen is plentiful! In the summer he loves climbing to find the rarest wild flowers - Indian Paintbrush & Prairie Fire are his favorites - on the cliffs in Hyalite and the Beartooth and Tobacco Root Mountains. His favorite activity is trying to name all the flowers he can find and making up his own names when he can't remember the real ones.

In the fall he seeks out apple and apricot orchards - where he enjoys pollen and the fruit too! He sleeps in the fruit trees, but not far off the ground as he doesn't want to fall.

With the help of his bee-friends, he is learning how to fly. He has a habit of flying into trees and rocks, but what he lacks in gracefulness he makes up for in eagerness!

Blossom

Imagined and brought to life by:

Kaetlyn Able

Blossom the bun-bun-alope is very gentle and very shy. If she’s feeling especially timid she will camouflage with her surroundings to disappear. But when she recognizes a friend she flushes with bright colors and fancy patterns.

Her favorite toy? Her shiny golden ball of course!

Branches of joy

Imagined and brought to life by:

Cindy Owings

On a winter’s day not long ago, the Yellow Willow decided celebrate her 100 years of growing in the Madison Valley. She gathered all the critters who sheltered under, in, and above her tree-ness and told them she wanted to build a magical forest called Branches of Joy! She instructed the Moose and White Tail Deer to gather all her fallen limbs. She invited the Spiders to spin miles and miles of yarn. She asked two Redwing Blackbirds who forgot to fly south for the winter to carry the Spider yarn to the Badger Family in their den so they could create sweaters to clothe the branches. The Badgers worked feverishly for weeks stitching, crocheting, punch hooking, winding, and wrapping to cover the branches. The Mourning Doves cooed while the Coyotes yipped and played above the Badger den to encourage their work. Finally, each branch had a warm sweater! As the celebration drew near, the Jack Rabbit, in the dark of night, festooned the magical Branches of Joy with tassels and pompoms to catch the singing breezes. All the Madison Valley critters gathered in the colorful, twinkling Branches of Joy forest on the appointed day to thank the Yellow Willow for all she had provided them and the Earth over the last 100 years!

Delowlah Lu

Imagined and brought to life by:

Vicki Fish

Delowlah Lu is a child of the woods, her favorite food is spaghetti and her favorite game is collecting smiles which she puts in her pockets and later passes around as she flies through the night sky.

dug

Imagined and brought to life by:

Dan Haywood of Animoscillator Art

Dug lives deep underground but on rare occasions he will pop up, enjoy the view and soak up a little sunlight. He spends most of his time digging tunnels and burrowing; the more he digs the bigger his home becomes. He is extremely fascinated with excavators and how much dirt they can move.

Dug loves to eat dirt, that's why he needs such big teeth! Every once in a while he will get lucky and find a delicacy like a potato or even a carrot or two.

Dug lives his life according to a poem:

I'm not a freak!

I'm not a slug!

I have no feet!

My name is Dug!

Maude & Mildred

Imagined and brought to life by:

Anna Visscher

Maude & Mildred are a couple of fun-gals who live in the woods with their pet and favorite playmate – a Crimini named Carl.

They adore sharing compost cookies and tea with other funguys and gals. They play a variety of spore-ts but their favorite activity is doing art projects and making presents for friends. They also enjoy singing duets and their favorite songs are 'Amanita Grace' and 'She’ll Coming Round the Mushroom.’ They are avid gardeners and birdwatchers. They love it when birds perch on their caps and don’t mind that it messes up their spots.

They hope you’ll take a gift from the treasure chest or leave one for others!

Peter “Snacko” Snackbot

Imagined and brought to life by:

Jon Lamb & Brynner Massey-Lamb

You’ll find Snacko hiding in any school lunchroom where kids don’t like what they have to eat!

His friend skills include changing carrot sticks into chocolate pudding and toast into Moon Pies - his personal favorite treat.

He loves to play Four Square but is having trouble mastering it.

reginald

Imagined and brought to life by:

Adair Peck

Reginald (Reggie to his friends) is an octopus from Australia. He landed in Bozeman while searching for his human friend - a boy who loves plaid and hats as much as he does. He turned himself plaid and wears a spiffy hat so his friend will recognize him right away.

He loves fish sticks and tater tots, playing drums with 8 drumsticks, and always wins at Twister. At night, Reggie snuggles up with his favorite toy - a stuffed clam named Harold.

simon

Imagined and brought to life by:

Sarah Angst

Simon is a kind, quiet friend whose greatest wish is to help others express their own creativity.

He can often be found snuggled up with a good book (Harold and the Purple Crayon is his favorite) or at the Bozeman Public Library in search of a new beloved story. He loves to color (while eating Marshmallow Fluff by the spoonful) and also loves letting friends color him in. In fact, he is a wonderful listener and will always offer a fresh spot to color to anyone in need of a creative spark.

Simon is an ambassador for the Holter Healing Arts Program, whose mission is to transform lives and communities by integrating the healing benefits of art.

Snorange

Imagined and brought to life by:

Sharon Glick

with help from Mindy Misener & Bob Weirick

Twice a year, Snorange finds a place to land where she can rest and regrow the feathers on her powerful wings. It must be a place where she will find friends to protect her and fill her with love and food as she is vulnerable when unable to fly. Snorange’s body is heavy and she can hop only short distances (very awkwardly!) on her three legs.

Her favorite foods are carrots, cheese, butternut squash, cantaloupe, Cheetos, and oranges. She stores up energy in her body and also stores up songs and stories to keep herself entertained.

When her colorful flight-feathers come in, she joyfully takes to the upper reaches of the sky, where she is invisible to ground-dwellers and generally invincible. She never forgets a friend.

Stewart

the wish keeper

Imagined and brought to life by:

Kirsten Kainz

Stewart is made up of millions of wishes. He prefers to live in woodlands and pretty gardens.

He loves games and small treasure. He will keep your wishes for you and help them come true.

If you drop something pretty in his bowl your wish just may come true.

His favorite food is strawberries, warmed by the sun.

the Indriluma Twins

Imagined and brought to life by:

Noah Massey

Asteria and Brigid Indriluma (in-dreee-luma) can be found perched in trees or other high places. They love to play hide and seek, Red Rover, and all games children play at dusk while avoiding the call to dinner.

They always travel in pairs and eat only night blooming flowers. They will follow the scent of jasmine for great distances to feast on the blossoms.

Tudor Calatorul

Imagined and brought to life by:

Cristina Marian

with great help from Thomas Dunning

Tudor is a traveler. He wanders our planet with an open heart; making friends, absorbing cultures and collecting experiences. He knows the way people greet each other in different corners of the world, how the rain smells when touching different lands and the sounds of hundreds of songbirds.

In Romania, Tudor says that on the first day of a New Year, people eat fish. As the fish swims calmly under the water, so one will “swim” through hard times. In Spain, people eat twelve grapes very fast, making a wish for each grape eaten.

Tudor’s first stop this year is Bozeman! Share your favorite places in town for him to explore. Do you know any secret ones? What have you always dreamed of seeing? The suitcase in his hand is for notes to him. He’ll never forget you!

waffles the adventure cat

Imagined and brought to life by:

Nick Mask

When she’s not out exploring, you’ll find Waffles curled up in her fluffy bed, dreaming of her next escapade and the new friends she will make.

Waffles loves fishing, hiking, and space travel. Mars is her favorite planet to visit. Of course, she’s always open to a new destination or activity!

Her favorite food? Crispy, buttery waffles with extra syrup. She also loves potato chips.

woolbert

Imagined and brought to life by:

Mimi Matsuda

Woolbert always looked a little different from other woolly mammoths because he was born with brilliant blue fur! Woolbert’s parents loved him so much. They knew his special color would set him apart from others, so they encouraged him to follow his dreams - and Woolbert’s dream was baking! He attended The Cordon Bleu in Paris where he worked hard to become the best baker he could be (not easy without hands!)

Woolbert returned to the mountains of Montana where he shares tasty treats with friends, bringing them joy after playing outside in the winter. The only thing he loves more than baking and eating goodies is sharing them with others! Woolbert hopes you will take home a recipe from the little red-topped box. Please share photos with #woolbertsbakery!

Woolbert says ‘Thank you for being your own unique you.’
